Martha Levy and her sister Henrietta were the daughters of Mary Pearce and Judge Moses Levy. Their father was a very successful judge and lawyer, and the girls grew up in the highest rungs of Philadelphia's Protestant elite. Although they were the great granddaughters of Moses Levy, among the founders of American Jewry, this branch of the Levy family had been Episcopalian for several generations.

At the outbreak of the American Revolution Phillips favored the patriot cause; and he was an ardent supporter of the Non-Importation Agreement in 1770. In 1776 he used his influence in the New York congregation to close the doors of the synagogue and remove rather than continue under the British . The edifice was abandoned; and, with the majority of the congregation, Phillips removed to Philadelphia, where he continued in business until 1778. In that year he joined the Revolutionary army, serving in the Philadelphia Militia under Colonel Bradford. | Phillips, Jonas (I2680)

AUTO VICTIM DIES THURSDAY EVENING Mrs. Florine Loeb Succumbs to Injuries; Wright Charged with Manslaughter
Mrs. Florine Loeb, died at 6 o'clock Thursday night at a local hospital, where she had not quitted her bed since she was struck by an automobile last Monday.
Ernest Wright, 16-year-old school boy driver of the car which is said to have struck Mrs. Loeb, near Court Street Methodist church, was arrested two hours after the latter's death. He was later released in $1,000 bail, charged with manslaughter. Hearing for Wright in police court was set for the evening of December 20.
When a change was noted in the condition of Mrs. Loeb during the early morning, police officials visited Sidney Lanier High School and carried Wright to headquarters, where he was later released. Prior to the detention of Wright he had been free in bail on a charge of collision preferred the night of the running down of the victim.
Mrs. Loeb was a native of Reichshoffen, Alsace, France, coming to Montgomery when but a young woman. She was married to the late Leon Loeb in 1858 and during the many years of her residence in Montgomery won the esteem of a large circle of friends who will be grieved to learn of her death.
She was a member of Temple Beth Or, the Hebrew Ladies' Benevolent Society and the Council of Jewish Women.
Mrs. Loeb is survived by two daughters, Misses Carrie and Adele Loeb, and one son, Ralph Loeb, all of Montgomery; one sister, Mrs. Emelie Winter of Philadelphia, Pa., and one brother, Michael Loeb of Montgomery.
The funeral services will be held from the residence, 221 Clayton Street, at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon. Rabbi William B. Schwartz officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood. Montgomery Advertiser | Loeb, Florine (I5295)
