"Symptoms and Signs Apathetic hyperthyroidism: Apathy and inactivity dominate the clinical picture and replace the usual hyperkinesis. Associated cardiac or other organ system findings may occur. Patients look extremely old and wizened but, with treatment, rapidly lose some wrinkling and become more youthful-looking. They have been described as having a "characteristic senile appearance" of mild chronic illness, but when afflicted with an acute illness or stress, they "quietly and peacefully sink into coma and die an absolutely relaxed death without activation."
