| Notes |
- It was in about 1783 or 1784 that Catherine Hays' father took in his widowed sister, Reyna Touro and her 3 children. Catherine would have been about 7 or 8 years old, and Judah Touro, her first cousin, was just over a year older than she was. The youngsters were raised in the same joint household, and their attraction for one another developed into a youthful romance.
In 1801, after his uncle had refused Judah permission to marry Catherine, he left Boston to seek his fortune in New Orleans. It is believed that Catherine and Judah did not meet again, but kept in close contact through loving letters for more than fifty years.
On 2 January 1854, the never-married Catherine died in Richmond. Just 16 days later, on 18 January 1854, the never-married Judah Touro died in New Orleans. Neither of them knew of the other ones illness. They were buried next to each other in the Hebrew Cemetery in Newport, Rhode Island.
